Description

The X-RES is a built-up CNC cut balsa and ply kit designed for the new F3-RES high-start launched 2m Rudder-Elevator-Spoiler glider class popular in Germany and Austria.

The X-RES is the latest development of Alois Janowetz, the designer of the Minores, one of the top models of the 2015 season, with the many competition wins (including 3 victories in the Bavarian Open) in Austria and Germany. The new X-RES performs even better, with a documented sink rate of just 0.31 m/s (61 ft/min), which is exceptional for a 2m model.

The X-RES has pleasant flight characteristics and brilliant performance. The model is very agile and extremely easy to fly. The pre-production models enthused the test pilots and the flight performance was clear from the start. The sophisticated design and the brilliant use of weight-optimized materials allows a flying weight of 420g and thus a wing loading as low as 11 g/dm2 (3.7 oz/sq ft) out of the box, giving amazing performance.

The large 2-part spoilers allow almost vertical descents without an increase in speed. The wing separates into three panels and the tailplane is removable making the model very easy to transport.

The CNC cut kit has very simple and robust construction. With the exception of the 6 mm CFRP rods for the wing and the GRP rocker for the moving tailplane only selected and optimized balsa and plywood are used.

All components are bonded with easily available glue and the model's construction is simple, considering the excellent performance potential. The fuselage is already prepared for a ballast tube, which can take weights up to 250g. The design allows the use of commercially available and easily obtainable components. The recommended battery is an Eneloop E-550 or 800mAh in cube form. Oralight covering is recommended. An adjustable tow hook is standard and is included in the kit.

The kit includes a colour plan. See below for a link to an English translation of the X-RES build manual. For more info about the X-RES see this and this RCGroups build threads.

The X-Res kit contained good quality materials and the plan was well drawn. Building the model was not as easy as it could have been. The instructions on the plan are almost all in German and the on line guide lacks clarity. Having built many models and competed at the Nats, My advice would be , get the plan text translated. It would make building much more of a pleasure. I have yet to fly the model.

Superb service !

In these testing times of covid 19 , you would have expected some delay in receiving your order , but not a bit of it , around 5 days and wow ! was it packed securely !
I'm probably a quarter of the way through the build with no problems , but it's a good job
I downloaded the english translation that was linked on the listing . I am a returning model maker from about thirty years ago but so far it seems no harder than doing a jigsaw puzzle . ( I know famous last words ) but it looks right so far . Well done Hyperflight !

FANTASTIC plane

Just what I was looking for. Lightweight, full flying stab, d-box construction. Perfect for me.

B-grade balsa, compared to first X-RES.

This is my second X-RES. The first kit had very good balsa. The second kit actually has knots in the 2.5mm wing sheeting. The rest of the balsa so so, not the same as the first.

Everything it says it is and more

I ordered on a Friday, it shipped on Monday, received following Friday! The plane was an easy build if you have experience building. The manual in German wasn't much use here in the USA. The CD included translation wasn't much better. This is the 21st Century, there is no reason not to have a accurately translated manual. That said, follow the links to the RC Groups build threads, they are very helpful.
I did nothing intentional to build light but completed, the plane weighs 13.8 oz. A 1000mAh AAA NiMH receiver pack in the nose balanced right at the suggested 77mm CG with no additional nose weight added. Flying weight is 15.5 oz. With some care, it could be less. I did place receiver and servos as far forward as possible also. I covered in UltraCote Lite.
An initial hand toss produced over 250' flat glide with a neutral elevator. A couple hand glides and minor trimming and it was to the highstart. This bird just wants to fly! Right up the highstart with no pilot input. It will penetrate fine in about a 10 mph breeze but I feel it will probably need a bit of ballast with higher wind speeds. In dead calm it just floats...just a gentle very flat glide. Very relaxing. The two big spoilers will bring it down in a hurry, even still no violent downward pitching with a little up elevator programmed in. I have nothing but good to say about the flight characteristics. It's a blast just to throw it and make a big circle back to where you're standing. I have not yet had any good thermal conditions to fly in but I have no doubt, it will signal lift well and climb like a hawk.
The competition grade balsa is VERY fragile out in the wing tip sections. It is difficult not to break some, be gentle. Also, while the ribs are numbered on the plans, they are not numbered on the wood so be careful to install in the correct order. I also added additional vertical shear web per suggestions on the plan for added wing strength.
This has been a very positive experience, the kit is top notch, the service from Hyperflight is top notch, and the flight characteristics are just wonderful. The only negative is the need for an accurate English translation of the manual.

X-RES touches down

I don't think I can add anything to what has been said by many others about Neil's customer service. Outstanding should cover it!

Now the model. I haven't done any balsa bashing for a long time and having had my fill of foamies since returning to the hobby, I chose the X-RES on the basis of many positive reviews on here and Greg McGill's excellent build thread on RC Groups. I was not disappointed! Beautifully CNC routed parts (no more die crushed balsa here), everything fits perfectly. It could almost build itself! I shall be starting as soon as my ex-pat German neighbour has translated everything for me. When she's had her maiden I'll do a further review

Flying the X-RES is GREAT!

After building the plane exactly as it was planned, I am very pleased with how the very first test glide went. Only had to add a couple of down clicks. Then it was off to the upstart launch. That too went great and have been able to stay up over six minutes on several times. Like has been said before this plane will really float, but with the spoilers mixed with the elevator it will sink into a nice controlled landing. I really like this X--RES and highly recommend it. On to Albuquerque for the Labor Day contest.

X-RES RES Sailplane

The materials for this kit are all of excellent quality and are CNC cut. Only problem I have is that even the English translation is of poor writing and should have much more time put into the instructions with pictures. It has taken much time to go online at RCGroups to see where others have showed their build so that I did not make any mistakes. The actual plans are of excellent quality, but are small sheets of paper that have to be matched up to each other with the help of cross marks at the top and bottom of each sheet so as to keep everything in line. This works very well and keeps the plans small so as to be shipped without being rolled up. The plans have all German words for the parts and sizes of each, which would have been nice to have it in English. Overall the build is going great and I anticipate it will be a great flyer.

Fast shipping, A ++ on kit

Ordered this kit and it came in about 6 days to Missouri.
Kit is one of the best thought out kits if seen. Been into building kits for 40 years, and this is one of the best.

Speedy service

Ordered close to Xmas as my other plane parcel to UK from Germany hadn't arrived and I wanted to be sure of a plane to build. Hyperflight ready and reliably got the X-RES to me in two days. I was made to store the package unopened under the Xmas tree. Best present, quality kit, which I have now packed to build in Ireland and fly in France.

Kit came very fast! I am building now and what a great kit, should have ordered 2. Best kit I have ever had and should fly amazing. Will send review when I get it flying

 Review by:

as with other reviews - excellent service from Neil. The kit makes for a relatively easy build. as with most kits worth reading a few times to understand the translation. Looking forward to completing. would I buy this kit or another - yes most certainly. ideal for those wanting to build and could not face cutting the pieces out. Take a look at RCgroups for building tips - will post flights once ihave completed.

Flight Review

Flew the X-RES this morning in active 4 gust 6 78F air, bright blue skies with a few puffy white clouds. She is 15.3 oz so 3.7oz/sf. Used a tiny hi-start, 1/4” rubber and maybe a hundred feet or so of light Dacron line. She climbs near vertical and on the second launch she was clearly in lift, stretching the rubber nicely which produced a very credible zoom.

The airfoils are working! She moved from thermal to thermal with ease for several minutes, exhibiting a very nice L/D, circles in 10 foot circles, climbs nicely in frog farts, and the rudder is way effective. The dive test at 75mm CG showed a slow but positive pull up. Spent some time setting the elevator compensation for the spoilers which activate to about 60 degrees… more than enough to bring her down. Need to refine that and put the comp on a curve.

Bottomline: Boring !!! I highly recommend this bird for anyone who wants the ultimate gas bag!

Dick

X-Res

Usual fast service from Hyperflight. A high quality kit and a delight to build. I covered mine in Oralight and used the recommended Blue Bird and Power HD servos. The RX battery I used was a small 150ma Nimh to save weight, which is good enough for several launches before recharging. I do not fly competively and I've used a 10m x 6mm bungee with 50m of line achieving good launch heights. This glider performs fantastically being very light weight and is strong enough to survive a bad launch (computer radio fopar!, accidentally launched with full up trim). I've had around 20 flights now and have been so impressed I have ordered the electric version, hopefully it will be in stock soon :-)

New X-RES on the left coast of the USA

Received the kit in California, USA, from Hyperflight after just 4 days. Amazing service from Neil. The kit arrived safely, is beautifully done, with exceptional wood quality and selection of weights for the intended purpose… nice.

Between the wonderful plans and Greg’s build thread on RCGroups there were few question except I’m stubborn I suppose. Having designed so many birds over the decades I sometimes find it a bit difficult to build another’s design. Oh well !!!

To nitpick a bit, the parts are “diecut” with a router, beautifully done, but leaving a radius of about 30 thou (0.7mm). That was not a problem except for the ribs and getting the spar caps to seat perfectly. Just required some fiddling with a very small square file to fix… no biggie.

A minor change was the hatch. I prefer a proper hatch and a nicely rounded top side so just used ¼” balsa (6mm). Used cross-grain fore and aft of the hatch and longwise grain for the hatch. That required sanding a flat on the fuselage for the hatch… easy stuff and all shaped with ease. With a tab at the front and a magnet in the aft end all is spiffy.

For equipment I used KST X08 v5 servos on the rudder and flying H-stab, Dymond D47 servos on the spoilers with just the servo arm directly driving the spoiler, a 1200mAh round 1S LiPo, and a JR RG612BX Rx… same stuff I used many times in my hand launched stuff. That setup provides at least 3 hours of flying. I do have Rx voltage telemetry to watch the 1S power supply on the JR XG8 Tx.

I did hog out the nose block to accommodate a full ounce of lead shot before gluing it on and needed most of that capacity. I use a hole in top of the block to add lead. In the end, with 24 grams of lead shot (0.8oz) the bird balances at 75mm with an AUW of 436 grams (15.3oz), resulting in a wing loading of just 3.7oz/sf… stupid light !!! (Yeah, I mix units of measure… sorry)

Looking forward to many moments of flying and with other like birds under construction at the field we could have a bit of serious competition!

Dick

Excellent quality parts and cutting.
English build instructions would be a help, as with the wing centre section its quite easy to go wrong. Very important to fully trial fit all ribs and spoiler box before gluing anything.
Still building.

I received this order today, and everything is perfect. These are the nicest kits I've ever put my hands on! I've been reading up on the RC Groups build thread, and I plan to take my time to ensure a careful and well executed build. They actually look like they're made to go together rather easily, so hopefully everything goes smoothly.

It is a pleasure doing business HyperFlight, and thanks for your efforts in making sure my package arrived safe and sound.

Well Designed 2 Meter Sailplane Kit

Fortunately, there was time available over the last week and when the X RES arrived (about 5 days shipping to Cincinnati, Ohio) I got straight to work. Was able to find an English version of the instructions online and together with the provided information assembled the plane without a hitch. The CNC cutting was good and the balsa was also. However, I was not able to install the top flange of the wing beam so that it touched the web. I had to fill the gap with epoxy. Also, the kit was missing a small CF piece. Otherwise the kit was an enjoyable build. Looking forward to finishing it now.

X-RES

The kit is amazing. Wood, hardware, and design. Wish I spoke German but I was able to find great English instructions on www.rcgroups.com.

Even more impressive than the kit was the service I received from Hyperflight once the kit was in stock. I received my kit in less than a week in perfect shape thanks to an excellent packing job.

The X-RES is a Winner!

This was my first CNC produced kit. I have to say this kit was a pleasure to build and finish. Having build many previous kits the lack of good English instructions wasn't a problem. The plans are well done and easy to read.

Where this model really shines is its performance. On the fourth or fifth hand toss I was able to "thermal out" for a nearly 9:00 minute flight. I have already had a lot of fun flying the X-RES and we have yet to launch it with a high start. This is not a kit to missed!!

X-RES

The X-RES kit arrived in New Zealand just 4 days after ordering, the kind of exemplary service that Hyperflight have provided with everything I have bought from them.

Good packaging meant that everything was in perfect condition and as soon as other projects allowed I started the build. Everything fitted and I'm sure the model could be built straight out of the box, but a little light sanding here and there and the odd shave in corners with a knife pays dividends. The quality of materials is very good and accuracy of the parts exceeds anything I could do by hand.

It pays to take your time and plan ahead as the supplied DVD instructions have suffered a little in translation, but reference to the photos and Greg McGill's on line build site are sufficient guide to ensure construction is straightforward. I still have the covering to do but this is a fine kit and a pleasant build. If it flies as good as it looks I shall be more than happy.

X RES

Simply the most beautiful kit I have ever built, everything fits as you would only ever dream of, if this is the future I will be doing a lot more balsa bashing. The basic build has been easy to achieve in only three days, I intend to fly this mainly on the slope on days when everything else is grounded,so I have fitted a ballast tube and I'm glassing the fuz.
I will update this when I have a flight or two under its wings.

Ordering process is simple compared to some other sites and delivery was prompt. The kit was easy to build with the parts fitting well except near wingtips where CAC cutter didn't get the spar notches in the small ribs quite right. Fairly easy to make the advertised flying weight when built to plan.

Excellent Service! Received package in 4 days. Ordered Sunday night received in Utah USA that Thursday.

Kit was perfect everything fit and engineering was outstanding. It came in a 452 grams weight. Hit a thermal at first launch. VERY PLEASED!

X-RES Flight Review

For myself, even without a lot of time yet on the airplane, I find it inspires confidence. I set it up initially with +/-100% throw on both rudder and elevator, and quickly reduced that to +/-70% on rudder, and +/-60% on elevator. The result is an airplane with control authority, that feels precise at all times. I do not hesitate to roll over into a circle at eye level to work the small stuff down low. Even with only three sessions on it, I've climbed out several times from maybe 20 feet.

The response by another who flew it at last weekend's Hiss and Boink contest says it all: he would not give up the airplane to anyone else, and between heats, he spent his time hand-launching it, over and over. I suspect he flew the airplane over two hours without pause. His official comment: "At last, an RES airplane that actually responds to the rudder!"

X RES Kit and Build Review

Here in Albuquerque, we are looking at as many of the current crop of 2-meter RES gliders coming out of Germany as we can manage. We have done the PuRES and the Slite. The latest one completed is the X-res.

The kit arrived in good order from hyperflight in the UK, no damage whatsoever. The plans are good, and the pictures in the instructions (despite being in German, and us Americans being totally deficient in foreign languages) make for straight-forward construction. Parts are CNC-routed from good balsa and excellent light plywood. This kit differs from the others we have on hand, in that there is no structural carbon: fuselage and wing are entirely wood. The design features an all-flying horizontal tail with a pylon made of flat carbon sheet, also CNC-routed.

The wing construction is a wood I-beam with spruce spars on a routed shear web, that is sandwiched in a sheeted D-tube leading edge. I've built this way on other airplanes in the past, and the result is typically rugged while light. The X-res fulfills the promise. Construction of the wing is non-traditional for me, in that the structure is pulled up off the building board before the D-tube is fully sheeted. Even so, the wing came out very straight in both examples we built. Another feature is a false leading edge that is fabricated from scrap 2mm wood taken from the sheet that carries the ribs. Nice conservation of material. There are angle templates for the root ribs. Finally, the kit includes templates for the wing leading edge, to assure proper profile. There are soft, light plywood and made shaping easy. We are confident we obtained the correct leading edge profile.

The fuselage uses thin plywood doublers on balsa sheet, with a hard balsa longeron at each corner. All the bulkheads (plywood from nose to wing trailing edge, balsa sandwiches aft from there) all fit very nicely. Again, easy to build straight and true.

The tail surfaces are built-up from interlocking pieces of balsa into a pleasing shape. While just flat plates, they appear to be able to resist (because of grain direction) warping. They assembled easily on a flat board without need to pin down on a plan.

We encountered two issues with the design. First is that the thin plywood doublers on the fuselage do not allow for the longerons, which have to be laid down over the 1mm step that results. Our solution was to feather the plywood, making a ramp. On other kits, similar doublers are cut to provide balsa-to-balsa contact between longerons and sheet sides. We still obtained straight fuselages that have no gaps. Second was an absence of any material to make the wing locating peg. The center rib has a 5mm hole for a rod almost 5cm long, to engage a 5mm hole in a fuselage bulkhead. I found a 5mm thick-wall carbon tube at the hobby store that fit exactly. Neither kit of our two samples had any rod material.

We built both ours with Hitec HS-65 servos for rudder-elevator. We chose HS-65s because they (1) fit; and (2) we had them on hand. You can get by with smaller, cheaper servos. We used an old, discontinued counterpart to Dymond D47s for the spoilers, again because they fit and were already paid for. Any small servo should do the job. We just wrapped the spoiler servos in tape, and glued them directly to the underside of the wing sheeting. There are holes in the ribs to allow passage of the servo wires.

Final weights are between 390 and 420 grams - very nice. We haven't flown ours beyond a few hand tosses of one, but the promise is there. We are waiting on weather, now.

If I get a chance to build another, I will most likely truncate the fuselage at the tail by about two inches, in the hope of reducing the need for nose weight.

We think this is a good kit, with excellent materials and a high probability of being built straight, which means it will also fly right. Dealing with Hyperflight has been pleasant as well. The fuselage doubler situation and the missing locating rod make this a 4-star rating.
